Why Videogames Are the Perfect Medium to Tell Meaningful Stories

Late last year our founder and lead writer Dagmar Blommaert gave a talk at Game Happens conference in Italy. She and Kenny Guillaume had together released an overwhelmingly successful narrative game Marie´s Room. It´s a story exploration game about an unconventional friendship and the entire game takes place in just one room - Marie´s bedroom.

Many indie games, such as Gone Home, have proven that an impactful story can be delivered in a restricted space - a house, a small island or even a single room. Every story is told through its characters and it´s the writer´s job to find universal triggers that allow the player to relate. In her talk narrative designer, Dagmar Blommaert covers practical tips on how to tell an impactful story under game design constraints. She´ll introduce principles in development that allow gameplay and the narrative goal to support each other. And explains how game design can allow for a narrative experience that grants the player freedom.

As writers and creators of narrative games, we need to dig deep to uncover everything there is to know about the characters. Have a glass of wine with your characters!
